Exhaust Systems

The exhaust system on today’s vehicles serve two primary purposes:  First, they neutralize the dangerous chemicals that are produced by the hundreds of explosions that occur inside the engine cylinders of your vehicle.  Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and other gasses are the “by products” of a gasoline engine.  Second, the exhaust system is designed to reduce the noise that your engine creates.

The major components of every exhaust system are the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, muffler and exhaust pipe.  In short, the manifold captures the chemicals and gasses coming off the engine, the catalytic converter “scrubs” the chemicals and gasses to neutralize them & reduce emissions, then the muffler and exhaust pipe quiet things down. Obviously, it is slightly more complicated than our simple description, but hopefully you get the picture.

Like everything else in your vehicle, components of the exhaust system can fail after time.  If you hear loud noises coming out of your exhaust system, experience a loss of power or acceleration, notice decreased fuel efficiency, or there is a strong smell of exhaust emission, it is time to have a technician diagnose your problem.  The most common issues we see are exhaust leaks created by rust, faulty oxygen sensor, clogged muffler or catalytic converter issues.
